Title: Technophobia and Techno-dystopia in Frankenstein
Abstract: Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein is a pioneering work of science fiction literature. It not only takes the lead in questioning the ethical boundaries of technological development but also presents a techno-dystopian world with powerful imagination. Notably, the technophobia and techno-dystopia depicted in the novel echo the technological criticism of Neo-Luddism. Some Neo-Luddites, like Kirkpatrick Sale and Stephen L. Talbott, are also concerned with the detrimental impacts of scientific technology on nature and humanity’s relationship with it. This novel, through exploring the theme of technophobia and techno-dystopia, reflects the concerns and fears of the author’s contemporaneous culture. With foresight that transcends its time, Frankenstein also offers readers a stern warning that the failure to comply with the ethics of science and technology may result in disasters for human beings.
