(Zhang Yuan)

Title: On the Possibility of Constructing a Dialogic Relationship Between Humans and Posthumans in The Windup Girl
Abstract: The Windup Girl is the debut novel by American writer Paolo Bacigalupi, first published in 2009. In the novel, the marginalized identity of the posthuman character Emiko is linked to the fates of the lower class, women, foreign refugees, and GMOs. Therefore, by creating common themes, human and posthuman establish the groundwork for dialogue and facilitate a shift towards a cognitive model of “polyphony”. Centered around the three common issues—“reconstructing the identity of marginalized women”, “reflecting on the limitations of the ‘perfect human’,” and “repositioning artificial species”—human and posthuman express their longing for autonomy and independence, equal rights, humanistic care, and a sense of belonging to their homeland from different perspectives. As a result, the novel develops a polyphonic narrative characteristic that transcends the boundaries of the characters’ established identities.
