A Review of Selected Essays on Chinese Science Fiction

Abstract: Currently science fiction is stepping beyond literature to become a spirit of the times, an industry, serving as a unique methodology to address human predicaments in the era of the Singularity. It is within this contemporary context that Selected Essays on Chinese Science Fiction, edited by Wu Yan and Jiang Zhenyu was published in October 2025. There is a long tradition of compiling science fiction theory readers. This volume should be viewed as the latest development in Chinese science fiction studies, if it is situated within the broader lineage of readers that have helped canonize knowledge in this discipline. The selected essays reflect the editors’ definition of science fiction, which balances its core connotations with its rich extensions. The essays are both canonical and critical, consistently embodying a China-centered perspective within the global science fiction system. Finally, in terms of structure, this book draws on established Western theoretical anthologies and incorporates helpful reading guides following each essay. Its publication not only provides systematic documentary support for science fiction researchers but also lays a solid foundation for science fiction education and popularization. It marks a milestone in the theorization, historicization, and systematization of Chinese science fiction studies.

摘要：当前，科幻正走出文学成为一种时代精神，一种产业形式，甚至是一种独特的、能解决奇点时代人类困境的方法学。吴岩与姜振宇主编的《中国科幻论文精选》于2025年10月出版，它正是在这样的时代语境中孕生。国内外均有编撰科幻理论读本的历史，读者要在学科知识经典化的“读本”谱系中定位此读本，它是中国科幻研究读本的最新发展成果。本书的选文能体现编者定义“科幻”兼顾核心内涵和丰富外延，论文兼有经典性和批判性，他们坚持在选文中体现世界科幻系统中的中国本位。最后，本书的编排学习借鉴了国外经典理论读本，同时还贴心设计了文后导读。本书的出版不仅为科幻研究者提供了系统的文献支撑，也为科幻教学与普及工作奠定了坚实基础。这是中国科幻研究学理化、历史化、系统化的里程碑著作。
